Perlman, M., and Reisner, S. H. (1973). Archives of Disease in Childhood, 48, 627. Asymmetric crying facies and congenital anomalies. The frequency of hypoplasia of the depressor anguli oris muscle in a newborn population was 41 in 6360 (1 in 155). No adverse factors were noted in the obstetric background of affected infants and the pathogenesis of the lesion is not clear. The incidence of associated congenital anomalies detected in the newborn period was 2 in 41 (4. 9%). The lesion

Asymmetric crying facies associated with congenital hypoparathyroidism and 22q11 deletion.
Asymmetric crying facies is caused by congenital hypoplasia or agenesis of the depressor anguli oris muscle. Associations of this facial defect with major congenital anomalies have been reported, most commonly in the cardiovascular system and less frequently involving the genitourinary, musculoskeletal, cervicofacial, respiratory, and rarely, the endocrine system. CATCH 22 is a medical acronym ...
متن کاملCongenital Unilateral Hypoplasia of Depressor Anguli Oris
Objectives. Asymmetric facial appearance may originate from abnormalities of facial musculature or facial innervation. We describe clinical features of congenital hypoplasia of depressor anguli oris muscle in a child. Material and Methods. Chart of a 10-month-old female referred to a tertiary care pediatric hospital for assessment of facial paralysis was reviewed. Data included relevant history...
متن کاملInterstitial deletion and ring chromosome derived from 16q.
An interstitial deletion of 16q was identified in an infant with failure to thrive, dysmorphic facies, and congenital heart defects. The mother of this infant had a similar deletion of 16q with ring formation of a fragment presumed to be derived from the deleted portion of 16q. We discuss these cases and compare them to other reports of 16q deletions.

The clinical hallmark of asymmetric crying facies (ACF) is a symmetric appearance of the oral aperture and lips at rest, but significant depression of one side of the lower lip with animation (crying or smiling). ACF can resolve spontaneously in the first year of life, but surgical intervention may be required at some point to ensure a good cosmetic outcome. The authors report on the successful...
متن کاملAsymmetric neonatal crying: microdeletion, infection or birth injury?--a case report.
Asymmetric neonatal crying is a rare minor congenital abnormality caused by unilateral agenesis or hypoplasia of depressor anguli oris muscle and depressor labii inferioris muscle. It is either an isolated clinical finding or one of the clinical findings included in several malformation syndromes linked to a microdeletion within a chromosomal region 22q11.2. Some malformations in that region ar...
